Have you visited the Lake District?
The Lake District National Park is a wonderful part of the UK and an ideal destination for anyone who loves mountains, valleys, cute little market towns and villages, as well as some beautiful beaches and of course, lakes.
I really don’t visit the Lake District as often as I would like and last summer was my first trip there in a really long time.
Deciding to use Airbnb in the Lake District
After having used Airbnb in Brussels and Lisbon, I knew I wanted to find a cosy little Airbnb in the Lake District, far away from the crowds and city life. I just wanted a weekend to have some alone time, surrounded by nature. Living with fibromyalgia is difficult but a good dose of nature always does me the world of good.
Choosing my Lake District home
I searched for suitable properties on Airbnb, filtering listings with ‘entire home’ available. I discovered Cosy Cottage, which is located on a farm in Broughton Mills, not far from Broughton-in-Furness, a small market town on the southern edge of the Lake District. THIS was exactly what I was looking for. A cute little one-bed cottage, with all mod-cons and amazing views of the Lake District countryside. Added bonus: it’s on a farm!
Before my stay
Before arriving, I contacted the host, Janet and I received really helpful directions as well as a recommendation for dinner at the local pub, the Blacksmiths Arms. Apparently it’s advisable to book in advance. I never tried it as I wanted to spend time alone and cook for myself.
Arriving at Cosy Cottage
The cottage was easy to find, with Google Maps and the directions I had been given. The cottage is right at the end of a long lane through the farmland, so you definitely need a car to get there. The surrounding area is absolutely beautiful, making it a perfect location for my cosy little retreat. ❤
Soon after arriving, Janet came to introduce herself and informed me, her son was available and lived opposite the cottage, if there were any problems. There weren’t, but it’s always nice to have that support up-front.
My Airbnb rural retreat
The cottage itself was just as described on Airbnb and it was lovely, light, clean and welcoming.
There’s a little area to sit outside the front of the cottage and the entrance opens into a hallway, with a wooden staircase, which is filled with natural light, from the front of the cottage.
Let’s explore inside…
Opposite the entrance is a door straight into the open-plan kitchen-living room, complete with super-cute wooden beams, full kitchen, TV, sofa and dining area.
The kitchen is well-equipped, with everything you might want to cook a nice meal and clean up afterwards. The dining area also has lots of brochures and maps to inspire you to get out and explore the area. Wifi is also available and sufficient for doing some research online too. I got 2.91 mbps download speed when I tested the connection, which is decent, considering the cottage is in a rural location.
The staircase leads to the first floor bedroom, which includes a cloakroom (toilet and hand basin) and shower cubicle. The bedroom has two skylights, one near the shower and the other at the opposite end, just above the head of the bed, which I really liked.
The bedroom is a reasonable size, with plenty of room for two people. The shower cubicle is accessed directly in the bedroom, with the cloakroom opposite.
Views from the cottage…
The surrounding area is picture-perfect, with wonderful views from the living room and around the cottage.
Friendly neighbours…
Well this was an unexpected, adorable and slightly strange experience! 😂 The four-legged neighbours decided to pay me four surprise visits! I was sat watching a film when I heard a strange noise outside. It was a weird kind of breathing. I turned to the look at the window and there were two calves stood right in the window, looking at me! They later returned with the rest of the family, they all wanted to take a turn to say hello! It was definitely a highlight of staying on the farm.
